Hurricane season peaks in September: refills, kits and what's on around Fernandina Beach

September starts tomorrow, and on a barrier island that means one thing before it means anything else. September 10 is the climatological peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, and most of a season's activity falls between mid-August and mid-October. It is a good week to get a few things squared away.

The part of the kit people forget

Water, batteries and canned food get bought early. The prescription that ran out three days before the storm does not. If you take something every day, look now at how many days you have on hand and when your next refill comes due. If it is close, call us. We would rather sort it out this week than during a warning, when the phones are busy and the roads are worse.

A few other things worth putting in the tote while you are at it. A written list of your medications and doses, in case you end up somewhere without your bottles. A small cooler and ice packs if anything you take has to stay cold. The over-the-counter items you actually use, since those clear off shelves everywhere first. The season officially runs through November 30, so none of this is wasted effort in October either.

What is going on in town

Brown Bag Lunch — Wednesday, September 2. Noon to one in Baker Hall at the Amelia Island Museum of History, with Chip Kirkpatrick. Bring your own lunch.

Sounds on Centre — Friday, September 4. The September first Friday downtown on Centre Street, with The 7 Street Band.

Community Appreciation Day — Monday, September 7. Ten to four at the history museum. Worth knowing about if you have lived here for years and never actually walked through it.

Brown Bag Lunch — Wednesday, September 9. Noon to one again in Baker Hall, this time with Dr. Roger Smith.

And in the gift shop

The fall things are starting to come out. Hand-painted wooden door hangers and tea towels, made by hand and never in large numbers, so the good ones do go early. If you want something on the front door before the pumpkins arrive, come look now rather than in October.
