Homecoming week in Fernandina Beach, plus Oktober Fest and the run into October
Mid-September, and the mornings have finally stopped feeling like August. It is homecoming week at the high school, the fall festivals start next weekend, and from here the calendar does not really let up again. Here is what we found on the books.
September
FBHS Homecoming Parade — Friday, September 18. Five o'clock, the traditional route through town. Bring a chair and get there early if you want a good spot.
3rd on 3rd — Friday, September 18. Six to seven in Baker Hall at the history museum, Dr. Steve Knoll on “Many Revolutions.” Late enough that you could do the parade first.
Nassau County Small Business Expo — Saturday, September 19. Ten to two in the auditorium at the Atlantic Recreation Center. Worth a walk through if you run something small here, or if you just want to know who does what in the county.
Fourth Friday Art Gallery Tour — Friday, September 25. The downtown galleries stay open into the evening. It costs nothing and it is a nice walk.
Oktober Fest — Saturday, September 26. Eleven to six on 2nd Street downtown.
Fall Festival — Saturday, September 26. Noon to four at the Atlantic Recreation Center. Same day as the other one, so you can do both if you pace yourself.
Sunset Concert Series — Sunday, September 27. Seven to nine at the Amelia River waterfront park, timed so the music and the sunset land together.
October
Sounds on Centre — Friday, October 2. The last one of the year. The series runs first Fridays and wraps up in October.
Island Hop Craft Beer Fest — Saturday, October 3. One to four in Central Park.
Les DeMerle Amelia Island Jazz Festival — October 4 to 11. A full week of it at venues around the island.
Northeast Florida Fair — October 8 to 18. Eleven days, out at the fairgrounds in Callahan.
Amelia Island Half Marathon — Saturday and Sunday, October 10 and 11. The 5K runs Saturday evening and the half starts early Sunday from Main Beach Park.
Game day at the store
Homecoming is about when people start thinking about the front door again. We hand-paint wooden door hangers here in the store, and the game-day ones tend to go early once the season is properly underway. They get painted a few at a time, never in large numbers, so if you want a particular one it is worth asking rather than waiting.
We also do custom shirts, embroidery and monogramming in house. Team shirts for a group, a class, a booster club, a family walking the parade together. It is not a same-day job, so if you need shirts for a Friday night game, come see us at the start of that week and we will have time to do it right.
We are at 1551 S 14th Street, Suite 1, open Monday through Friday, nine to six, closed weekends. Call us at (904) 261-3171 or come by and we will get it started.
